We offer a range of Skipper Courses depending on the vessel you wish to be certified to use. Our qualified and highly skilled team will provide the most interactive training that you can experience in urban and natural surroundings. Skipper Courses & Practical Training Offered
Category R: Vessels operating solely on inland waters.
Inland waters: To operate within a port, fishing harbour, tidal river, lagoon, estuaries and all inland waters within South Africa
Pleasure vessel: A vessel that is used solely for sport or recreation
Commercial vessel: A vessel that is not a pleasure vessel
LECTURES : 4 hours
EXAM: 1 hour closed book exam
PRACTICAL ON WATER : 1 hour
Definitions:
Category E: Vessels operating less than 1 nautical mile from shore.
Power Driven: a vessel propelled primarily by mechanical means.
Pleasure vessel: a vessel that is used solely for sport or recreation
Commercial vessel: a vessel that is not a pleasure vessel
LECTURES : 5 hours
EXAM: 2 hour closed book exam
PRACTICAL ON WATER : 1 hour
Definitions:
Category C: vessels operating less than 15 nautical miles from shore
Power Driven: a vessel propelled primarily by mechanical means
Pleasure vessel: a vessel that is used solely for sport or recreation
Commercial vessel: a vessel that is not a pleasure vessel
LECTURES : 7 hours
EXAM: 3 hour closed book exam.
PRACTICAL ON WATER : 1 hour
Definitions:
Category B: vessels operating less than 40 nautical miles from shore
Power Driven: a vessel propelled primarily by mechanical means
Pleasure vessel: a vessel that is used solely for sport or recreation
Commercial vessel: a vessel that is not a pleasure vessel
LECTURES : 6 hours
EXAM: 2 hour closed book exam.
PRACTICAL ON WATER : 1 hour at night
- Certified Copy of I.D (If ID card then both sides certified)
- 6 x Colour I.D Photos
- Medical – To be completed on SAMSA documents
- Eye Test – To be completed on SAMSA documents
- Log Sheets – 25 hours signed off by a competent skipper
- Log Sheet – 12 surf launches. Only 3 launches per day over 4 days can be logged.
Surf Launch Training can be done if requested using our Vessel at an additional cost. The training will be done at Umkomaas on a one-to-one basis and includes signing off the required log hours.
Sheltered Launch Training can be done if requested using your Vessel at an additional cost.
JET SKI Training can be done if requested using your Vessel at an additional cost.
The Short Range Certificate is for DSC / VHF radios operating up to 40 miles from shore
The Marine Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures and everyday operating techniques. Learn all about the uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, (DSC/GMDSS).
All mariners, including recreational boaters, will want to take advantage of the many features and capabilities of this innovative form “automatic” radio. Secure your lifeline. Be sure that you and your family take the Marine Radio course.

Venue : Bluff, Durban
Enrolment Requirements: Must be minimum 16 years of age
Complete enrolment form
Certified copy of ID (If ID card then both sides certified)
3 x colour ID photos
